Trowbridge is the County town of Wiltshire, a large rural county in southern England, but is close to Bath (just 20 minutes) and Bristol (40 minutes). Naturally the largest employer is the Wilshire County Council and together with the West Wiltshire District Council, the town has a strong administrative bias. Historically the town was a weaving and cloth manufacturer but now all the mills have closed. Some have been demolished, others converted into houses and offices and a few await a new use. A hundred years or so ago, the town specialised in light engineering and food production. The famous meat pie and sausages company, Bowyers, is still here but the large beer making company, Ushers, recently closed and the plant sold to North Korea!
Now the town is re-inventing itself again. The new modern White Horse business park houses Richard Branson's entreprenurial and fast growing Virgin Mobile telephone company. To the north, the new village of Paxcroft Mead at Hillperton will grow to 1,800 houses. It will provide a base for the expanding work force as well as those commuting to Bath and Bristol. Now, 2 developers have just submitted major proposals to re-develop 2 large sites in the town centre.
Trowbridge is situated within the flat river plain of the river Avon. To the south are chalk hills with the famous ancient white horse carved into the chalk. To the west are the spectacular Avon gorge as it makes its way to the beautiful and historic spa town of Bath.
Eventually we hope to add some photographs.
We have recently re-located here from the beautiful village of Vernham Dean in Hampshire.
